Two Day Axe Making Class

This is a little more advanced than the one day class. On this class we will forge traditional firewelded hand axes, sometimes called butterfly axe process. This class will involve forging a blank out to the required shape to then fold in half and fireweld the seam together at over 1100 degrees! We then add a piece of high carbon steel for the cutting edge.

This is an excellent course for groups and does require team work to move the metal where you want it to go.

Day 1 is split in to three parts. Part one is forging out the axe, Part two is firewelding the axe parts together, Part three is then heat treating the axe to turn it in to a working tool.

On Day two we start of by refining the shape and profiles of the axe and cutting edge. We then finish up shaping and hafting (handeling) the axe. By the end of the two days you have a fully working hand axe to take away with you.

( These are larger axes and a different pattern than the axe we produce on the 1 day classes)

For people who have done some forging before try your hands at making something more tricky like a bearded axe.

This is also open to re-enactors who wish to make a blunt fighting axe.

What's included in the price?

All the tools, materials, P.P.E (safety glasses, hearing protection, apron, etc)

Free tea, coffee and squash provided but please bring your own packed lunch.

You will need to wear work type clothes, no nylon or synthetics etc. (Jeans and T shirt most appropriate expect sparks & flames)

Also safety boots are preferred other wise leather or walking boots are best. No open toed footwear is allowed in the forge for safety reasons.
